**Magnitude 4.8 Earthquake Shakes Long Island, Felt Across New York and New Jersey** A magnitude 4.8 earthquake shook Long Island at 10:23 am on Friday, causing buildings to tremble in New York City and parts of New Jersey. The quake was the strongest ever recorded on Long Island. Multiple aftershocks have been reported, including one around 6 pm that shook homes in Port Washington, Long Island. The earthquake is the latest in a series of seismic events to hit the East Coast in recent years. In May of last year, a magnitude 2.2 earthquake rattled parts of New York and New Jersey, and in 2011, a magnitude 5.8 earthquake in Virginia radiated through Nassau and Suffolk counties on Long Island. The US Geological Survey (USGS) said the earthquake's epicenter was located 13 kilometers (8 miles) northwest of the town of Huntington, New York. The quake occurred at a depth of 12 kilometers (7.5 miles). According to the USGS, the earthquake was "widely felt" in the New York City metropolitan area, as well as in parts of Long Island, New Jersey, and Connecticut. There have been no reports of major damage or injuries as a result of the earthquake.
